Dam Straight Nieuws You Can Use! Internal Communications made fun with a Video Newscast

With 15 cruise ships sailing every region of the world pretty much 24/7, Holland America Line needed a way to get news out to the fleet’s officers and crew in a timely, entertaining and informative way.

How do you make internal communications fun?

Take equal parts corporate culture and pop culture, add one smooth-talking Dutchman, and you get Dam Straight – Nieuws You Can Use (think Dutch). Our ‘onboard’ television show vibes off The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In each 3-5 minute episode the host, a HAL corporate director, covers a particular topic with a combination of script, guest interviews and location footage.

Each quarter we write, shoot, and edit 2 or 3 episodes that play on each ship’s internal on-demand media system. Keeping the content fresh and relevant is imperative, so we suggested that corporate ask the crew what they want to know. Based on a request to see the office – one episode gave a complete video tour of corporate headquarters, providing a unique connection between the people on the ships and those in the home office.
